Now that you have a better understanding of what AI actually is—from its historical roots to the various ways we define and measure intelligence—let’s officially dispel some of the most persistent myths that have followed this field like a shadow since its inception at Dartmouth in 1956.

Misconception: AI is conscious.

Reality: AI replicates patterns in data rather than possessing any form of subjective awareness, emotions, or self-consciousness. When an AI generates a poem or offers comforting words, it is not feeling anything. It is statistically predicting which words are most likely to follow previous ones based on its training data. While AI can produce outputs that appear thoughtful or even emotional, these are statistical associations, not genuine consciousness.
Why it matters: The concept of AI raises fascinating philosophical questions about whether a machine could ever truly be conscious, what it would mean for a non-human entity to have rights, and how we should treat an artificial system that appears to think and feel. These are important debates, but they remain speculative for now. Humans are hard-wired to empathize with what appears similar to us, which can make us feel that systems which mimic speech or emotion actually possess these characteristics. However, treating AI as sentient distracts from the real, concrete issues of bias, privacy, and labor exploitation that demand our attention today.

Misconception: AI will outsmart humans.

Reality: Increased computing speed and memory capacity simply allow AI to process more data faster. They do not make AI more intelligent or capable of understanding in the way humans do. Speed does not give computers the ability to understand things the way humans do, or to be more flexible and less failure-prone. Besides, improvement in cognitive capabilities is curtailed by the physical limits on how much speed we can engineer. Robots rely on electricity and consume lots of it. Their capacity to evolve into sentient beings is dependent on their very limited electric capacities.
Why it matters: The concept of a singularity, which is a tipping point when computers become more intelligent than humans, ignores fundamental differences between computational processing and human cognition. Although AI’s computational capabilities may surpass human intelligence in specific, narrow tasks, it is not equipped to outsmart human ingenuity, critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to understand the broader picture. How robots are often presented in the press is way out of step with their actual or likely capabilities.

Misconception: AI makes computers think.

Reality: From a scientific point of view, no. Similar to the problems of defining “intelligence,” there is currently no definition of “thinking.” Thinking is generally associated with humans who are biological beings rather than artificial machines. Today’s most advanced AI systems fall short of human-like understanding and most likely lack consciousness. Current AI systems do not possess the intrinsic motivations, intentions, or subjective experiences associated with human thought. They operate through complex mathematical models and algorithms designed to recognize statistical correlations, rather than engaging in true comprehension or independent thought.
Why it matters: Believing that computers think leads to unrealistic expectations and misplaced fears about AI’s capabilities. It can cause people to overestimate what AI can do and underestimate the need for human oversight and judgment. The goal of AI is not to create human replicas but to leverage technology to solve complex challenges and enhance human potential. Recognizing this distinction helps focus on the practical, beneficial applications of AI rather than speculative concerns about machine consciousness.

Misconception: Making machines behave like humans is optimal.

Reality: This does not make sense because most people do not perform optimally, regardless of what task we consider. What it actually means is to make a computer perform like the best performing human. For one task this may mimic the behavior of one human, but for several tasks this will correspond to the behavior of a different human for every task. Such a super human does not exist. If a machine can solve more than one task, it does not make sense to compare it to one human because such a person does not exist. The goal is to make machines behave like an ideal super human, not like an average person.
Why it matters: This misconception leads to setting inappropriate benchmarks for AI performance. Comparing AI to human performance in a general sense is misleading because AI excels in specific, narrow tasks while lacking the broad, flexible intelligence of humans. Understanding this helps evaluate AI systems appropriately for their intended purposes rather than expecting them to replicate all aspects of human behavior.

Misconception: AI is a person.

Reality: People often refer to “an AI” as if talking about a person-like entity with greater-than-human intelligence and maybe even sentience. In practice, AI is a set of many different pieces of algorithmic software similar to smartphone apps. Some AI systems are combined into robots that are designed to look, sound, and behave in ways similar to humans to make them more user-friendly. However, to claim that AI applications communicate as humans do is misleading. AI is not a person as it lacks self-awareness, consciousness, emotional intelligence, and the ability to understand complex human contexts.
Why it matters: Treating AI as a person leads to anthropomorphism and unrealistic expectations about its capabilities. It can also lead to ethical confusion about the rights and responsibilities of AI systems. Understanding that AI is a tool, not a person, helps maintain appropriate human control and accountability.
